Morgan HAS to roll over this weekend. I mean really. Tonight Adam and I watched her teeter totter on her side multiple times while she was watching me...and then she'd go onto her back again. She's going to go back to belly first. She doesn't get it much the other way yet.
Holy Eat-a-potomus. Morgan has been taking cereal each night with some confusion with working oral-motor structures, some boughts with fussiness, some decent eating...and then there was tonight. I tried a different baby spoon that has more of a cup-shape to it than the other ones I'd been using and it was either the spoon or the fact that I had been starving her for days - oh wait, that's how she was acting, not reality - but Morgan proceeded to wolf down an ounce of formula mixed with just over a TBS of cereal, then eat an ounce of formula, and then when she looked like she was still hungry, I had Adam make another ounce of formula with slightly less cereal. Which she wolfed down again. I cut her off at that point b/c who knows what eating that much for the first time will do to a child. But woo hoo! Perhaps we're really on to something here. Even still, sticking with cereal for a while before trying anything else.
Morgan has just been in the best mood the past few days. It's made it really fun to be around her (obviously) and made life a bit easier in general.
Crying it out - we let Morgan really do this for the second time ever the other night b/c she had eaten, I bounced her on the ball for a good 10 minutes and she was still wide awake and looking at me. I put her in her crib with her nuk, which she spit out 3x so I went to lie down in bed and see what happened. Adam and I laid there and listened to her fuss a little bit and then when she started really crying we counted about 7 minutes before I went back up to see if I could get her to calm a bit. Listening to her crying like that was not the most fun I've ever had but we really want her to learn how to sleep and calm herself on her own. So I went upstairs, put her nuk back in her mouth (all while she's still in bed), wiped her tears off, watched her watch me for a bit, and then headed back downstairs...and within 5 minutes she was sound asleep. I hope it always goes that easy...but realize it won't. Still - we've had a few times this week where Morgan has put herself back to sleep - not always by crying, just being awake and going to sleep - and it makes us feel good that she's learning and being a "big girl" on her own.
My frozen stash of breastmilk no longer exists at the sitter's. I have about 15 oz here at home that I'm not quite willing to part with yet "just in case" but I could and likely should. But not yet. Today was the first day that Morgan took formula at daycare. I was fully convinced that she would be having this "first formula" at daycare so we started introducing it that first week of January. I made it almost 2 months longer than I thought I was going to in terms of sending only breastmilk to daycare. I'd consider that quite the accomplishment. Thank you...thank you. ::bows:: Still going strong on pumping and nursing whenever I can. I used to reliably get 10 oz of milk at work each day. This week I was lucky to get 8oz the whole week. Sigh. Still going strong, like I said. :)
Morgan's friend, Campbell, turned 1 yesterday. It's hard to believe the past year has gone that fast already. I'm sure Morgan's first birthday will come quickly...For now, I'm going to love and enjoy our little 4 month old wonder. :) Happy weekend!

4 months stats...and then some
Morgan had her 4 month doctor appointment today and it went alright. She was a very happy baby at the beginning. She smiled at anyone that remotely looked in her direction. I saw one of my high school students (who I just dismissed) and Morgan smiled her face off at him and his family. (proud momma) Then we measured her and here's what we have:
Speaking of expensive, Dr. Galoso asked us if we had started Morgan on solids yet. I reported that we had started cereal the week before and have gradually been thickening it with much success. She nodded and said that we could start giving Morgan 1st stage baby food now. As in tonight if we wanted to. And three times a day. What!? When did my baby go from EBF to supplementing and now able to eat 3 meals a day? I don't think we're ready for that on several levels so I think we're going to hang out with cereal for a week or two yet before we introduce anything else into her diet. Last night she went until 4am before needing to be nursed. I wonder if regular meals will extend that. Either way, she'll get there but we're not in any terrible rush. I'd also like to make her foods instead of buy all that formula but Dr. Galoso said that to do it the right/best way, we'd have to buy all organic foods for Morgan to avoid any pesticides. I'm down with that...but have to do my research. I didn't think she'd be ready for that so soon. I thought I had another 2 months or so! One day at a time and we'll get her there. She's clearly big enough so there's no concern that she's not well fed. :)
Then it came time for shots. I started to tear up as the nurse got her "into position" to poke her. First, Morgan had an oral vaccination and hated it. She cried and hacked her way through it. Then I started to cry/tear up b/c I knew what was coming and knew she would hurt...and boy did she scream. Red face, sad cry...and then it was over and I was glad Adam was there to help us pull it together. Morgan actually stopped crying soon after I picked her up but was still pretty sad while getting dressed. She slept the whole way home and then for a while upon arrival. I've got pictures of this round of bandaids too...but for some reason my motivation is low to post and I haven't put them up yet. By this weekend, I swear... ;-)
Few other quick things...I've got another cold which sucks even worse than the last one I think. It's the kind where you cough and you feel like there's a hole in your lung where the junk came from...gross, I know. Sorry.
I tried putting Morgan in a swaddle tonight that would allow for one arm to come out...thus maybe starting the weaning process from the swaddle...except Morgan wasn't having it. She lasted about 1.5 hours before she started fussing that BOTH arms came out and in turn she knocked her nuk out and rubbed her eyes to pieces. After attempting a "one-armed tuck" with no success, I reswaddled her in her old swaddle and watched her almost instantly become still and sleeping. My guess is that she'll be swaddled until she's 11. :)
Adam is traveling every other week now until the end of March. Ugh. His assignment is only supposed to be 25% (as far as I know...that might have changed recently) so that kind of stinks. I know he's doing well though so he needs to keep rolling with it. It's just hard for all involved when he's away. Happily I can report this is a "home" week. :)
For now that's it. I'm seriously considering lying down on the couch until Adam gets home from class in about 20 minutes. Yup, check ya later, as I'm heading to the couch. :)
PS. I made these cookies called cake batter cookies yesterday after tasting Denise's (SLP friend from work) and listening to her and Abbie talk about them Saturday night...and wow, they are SO good. These darn things will NOT help me in my quest for pre-pregnancy weight...come ON nice weather!! I wanna get outside and walk!!
- Length: 24.75" (66th percentile)
- Weight: 14.5 lbs. (also 66th percentile)
- Head circumference: 42cm? I can't remember if it was 42 or 32. I'm guessing it was 42. (76th percentile)

4 Months!
Can you believe it? It's been FOUR months already since this little monkey graced us with her presence...or maybe I mean 4 months, 2 days...she's a little demanding of my time. ;-) I'll try to remember all the things she's doing now and if I have any repeats of things I've mentioned before, sorry...I just don't have it in me to go back and read it all at the moment (fighting cold #2 in 3 weeks - ICK).
I'm getting really excited to get Morgan her Easter dress. She'll be 6 months old in April (crazy) so we're looking for that size for sure. She's also going to wear that dress to my friend, Meg's, wedding in April so we get more than one use out of it (unlike her Christmas dress/outfit). I found one today at Younkers I'm thinking might just make it home with us next Saturday when my coupons are all good. :)
Ok, off to get a few last minute things done and then bed. We're in the middle of a snowstorm (bleck) and if we have off tomorrow (which I actually highly doubt), I'm seriously considering going in to work and maybe taking a nap at home while Morgan's at Mary's. I'd be much better off if it wasn't for this stupid chest cold...
Oh! Morgan's 4 month appointment is tomorrow. I'm SO eager to see her stats. We know she's over 24" b/c we measured her one night a while ago already at 24.5". NOT looking forward to the shots part of things. Will let you know! (and finally post some pictures...)
- We have started Morgan on cereal. I know I've mentioned this one. We've been making it a bit thicker each day but I think we'll stick with where we're at right now. Tonight we tried 1oz breastmilk and 1TBS cereal. It was a little thick but she still loves it.
- Grasp - Morgan is starting to grasp items/toys/anything she can reach with an open-handed grasp using her thumb and fingers appropriately. For a while, she would keep her thumb tucked into her palm but now she's really getting the whole grasping thing. One thing she likes to do is reach and grab for Adam's face when she's standing and looking at him. It's cute...until he yells that she's grabbing his nose. :)
- Standing - Morgan LOVES to stand. She does it whenever possible, given our assistance, of course. She's going for longer periods before her little baby legs give out (don't worry, we're careful!) but she loves it.
- Tummy time - She's spending more time on her tummy and seems to enjoy it sometimes. What a difference 2 months makes. :)
- Rolling over---------nope. Nothing new to report here. Sigh. I know she'll do it...but come on!
- Feet - She's discovered these when she's wearing her penguin robeez shoes. She also brings them high up into the air now, which results in her going to her side...and then nothing.
- Mouth - if it's near her mouth, it's goin' in. Beware next time you're holding her.
- Giggling - She's giggled a few times now and laughs often if something's really funny - like mom making a funny face or daddy throwing her head/body back fast and bringing her up fast to his face. LOVE this sound.
- Napping - Morgan still naps in her swing here at home and at daycare. We're not switching to her crib until she does so at Mary's. Mary is magic. We trust her and go by what she does/says almost all the time. It's not like she's not been around infants for the past 25 years or anything...

Cereal time - Just in time for a dive in milk production...
This is going to be short b/c I've still got a million things to do before bed and with Adam gone this week and Morgan up with gas last night (besides her faithful feeding), I'm D.O.G. tired. So real quick, here goes:
Morgan officially had her first "cereal" yesterday. I write it as "cereal" b/c really it's not. It's flakes of some sort that dissolve into milk/formula (for those of you who don't know. Adam had no idea - he thought they'd be eating cheerios together). Anyway, we tried just some formula on a spoon two days prior just to see how she'd do with a "foreign object" in her mouth and it went relatively well. So last night I videotaped Morgan's first cereal b/c Adam's out of town T-Th this week and it went well too! She was a bit tired so at the end she got fussy but she did ok. Then last night Morgan was up at 11:30 (I initially thought the clock said 1:30...so disappointed) b/c of some serious gas and was up for 45 minutes...then again at 1:30 for feeding...I was really worried that we'd be up every other hour without Adam here...but that was it besides one nuk plug later on. Back to cereal...Mary (sitter) suggested giving Morgan cereal with breastmilk tonight to see if that helps her gas issues so I put 1/2 ounce of breastmilk together with some cereal and it went better. She still spit some out b/c her tongue doesn't know how to work things yet, but it went better. Then we had some down time where we played and I just had a feeling that Morgan was still hungry...so I gave her another bit of the same - 1/2 ounce of breastmilk and *slightly* more cereal in it...and she ate really well - and ALL of it. Fast. She also dipped WAY into her frozen stash at daycare and had (from what I figured) about 13 oz of milk at daycare today. Woah! Usually she has 12 at the MOST...hungry monkey. Her 4-month well check is Monday...can't WAIT to see where she is in terms of height/weight. She's getting SO big and long!
On a less positive note...the past two days have been KILLER for my milk supply. :-( I'm quite sad about this. I usually can count on anywhere from 9.5-11oz of milk from pumping at work. This is perfect for 2 bottles and a little left over for dream feeds, etc...and it's gone. I've gotten 7 oz both yesterday and today and that's even after some serious wait time b/w pumpings. I don't know. I am going to keep going b/c I want her to have at least 1/2 and 1/2 as long as we can...but if my supply is going to tank like this then I guess it will end sooner rather than later. Not the original plan...but I'm also not willing to kill myself to make it better. I wish I was strong enough to do that though. I know I'm not.
Ok, now that it's WAY later than I had hoped it would be, I'm going to go put diapers back together, pack Morgan's bag, and try super hard not to think about the work I should have done tonight instead of get ready for tomorrow. Ugh. But at least Morgan's doing well!! Will post pictures soon...but not during "single mom" week.

She's al...most...there...
Morgan is *almost* ready to roll over!! Right before bedtime she had her best effort yet - She turned onto her left side and instead of stopping, thinking about it, and then wiggling back onto her back, she turned her face into the floor and really tried to get there...and then back to her back. Ah! She was SOOOO close and I just KNOW it's going to happen very soon. We're really looking forward to it!
I bought Morgan her first rice cereal tonight. I'm going to try it with her tomorrow since we got home shortly after her bathtime was to have started so we'll see how it goes. Yesterday I played with the spoon in her mouth to be exposed and used to the sensation of it. I used formula for "flavoring" and she didn't do half bad. She did the typical "stick out my tongue when something's in my mouth" baby thing but she readily opened her mouth when the spoon came near and I got it in her mouth most of the time as some of the time she snuck her fists in ahead of the spoon. She seemed to really enjoy the attempts though and it was great fun.
Ok, I'm going to take a little snooze before Adam comes home from class. I went shopping with some friends today and I'm beat. It felt really good to get out for the day and do something "adulty" and not have to worry about someone else while shopping. :) I DID get her a little swimsuit for next year (on sale) but am still on the hunt for one for April when we travel to Kansas for my friend, Meg's wedding where Morgan will have the chance to go swimming at the hotel pool. Woo hoo...zzzzzzzzzz.

Visitors! Date night! Giggles!!
Grandma Sherri & Grandpa Al have come to visit us for the weekend! Hooray! We always love visitors, especially since we haven't seen any family since Christmas. They arrived around 6:15pm Friday night and since Miss Morgan was rather tired by then and not at all interested in a cat nap (like usual - she must have known there was fun coming), she was a little overwhelmed when they arrived. I believe she might be experiencing a little bit of stranger danger as she got upset near bedtime earlier this week when a friend (Jason) came over for dinner (he was "baching" it up - Adam's term for guy without his wife present for the night) and Morgan got upset when he said hi to her. Then when G&G came Friday night, they were SO happy to see her, she was tired, and all of a sudden this HUGE pout lip came flying out of nowhere and she was sad until one of us took her. It makes me feel good to know that she knows us so well that we calm her. I know this is normal but it still feels good. :) I'm hoping this isn't a permanent thing and that it's more related to her being tired and close to bedtime.
Friday, Morgan had her very first Valentine's Day Party at daycare. She brought valentines tied with ribbon to fruit snacks and received many of the same in return. She also got a bib that said "Mommy thinks she's in charge" from her friend, Brooklyn, and some yogurt bites from her good friend, Adelle, who says "The baby's here!" every time that Morgan shows up for daycare. We took pictures of Morgan with her valentines and I'll post it later. I don't know why but that's super adorable to me that she had a little v-day party. Mary also took (or tried) a picture of all the daycare kids so we'll get a copy when she has a chance. She wasn't sure if it would turn out b/c some of the kids are movers and shakers. :)
Speaking of daycare Friday, I showed up to bring Morgan home and asked how she'd eaten. Since getting sick, she'd only been eating about 2-4oz bottles each day at daycare; compare this to the almost 3-4oz bottles she'd been eating about 2 weeks before; and Mary smiles and reported that Morgan had not only (quickly) eaten the 2 bottles I had sent along (4oz each), but she'd also had 3oz from the frozen stash kept at her house! This was very bitter sweet - Yay! She is finally eating more again!! Boo - I canNOT keep up with a baby who eats more than 8-9oz a day at daycare b/c I'm only making about 8-10oz per day while pumping at work. Unfortunately, this has pretty much been the case of my "productivity" for the past month or two. I've also noticed a few times the past few nights that Morgan is still hungry after I'm done feeding her the last feeding for the night and needs 1-2oz of formula before going down for the night. :-( I knew this day was coming but it's officially here which means stinkier baby poop. I'm still going to go with the flow and keep pumping and feeding her as much as I can and only supplement her with formula as needed. My goal is to make it at least 6 months (only 2 to go!) and reassess at that time. Ideally I'd be breastfeeding her until I start back to work in August at which point I know I'm not pumping at work anymore. If she's still taking morning/bedtime feedings then, that's fine with me. She gets to start rice cereal (which is flakes mixed with milk/formula, for those of you who don't know - Adam didn't) in a few weeks when she's 4 months (on the 19th) after we go to her doctor's appt/well check on the 26th. I'm really excited to see what that does (sleeping through the night??? can a mother wish??)...
Today was Morgan's first day playing outside in the winter. Our friends, Jason & Julie, just bought a rather large plot of land (100+ acres) and we went out to see it...and brought Morgan along. Since her cold is doing fine and it was relatively warm out (27 degrees and super sunny), we bundled her up in fleece and a baby snowsuit and headed out. She did pretty well until she realized she was tired and slightly hungry at which point Julie & I headed back to the truck and I fed her some formula and we waited for the guys to return. Unfortunately, we forgot the camera so we couldn't take pictures of her in her little snowsuit playing outside for the first time. I'm SURE there will be many more times to come.
On the parent front, Adam & I got to go out for a "date night" for the first time in FOREVER. We've been able to go out for dinner in town here but it was usually rushed and we were worried about how Morgan was doing. So Grandma Sherri & Grandpa Al watched Morgan and we headed to the Quad Cities (woah - far far away...jk, it's only 30 minutes) to see Avatar and get some dinner. First of all, I must say that Avatar was THE coolest movie I have ever seen in my whole life on so many fronts. It took a while for my eyes to get used to the 3D effects/glasses but after they did, it was AWESOME. I would HIGHLY recommend it to anyone who wants to see something cool. It was a little science-y, had a great story line, and had the best special effects I've ever seen. In other words, go see it. :) We then headed to BW3s (I'm the coolest wife ever for going there for V-day) and had some dinner before heading home. We got a good report of behavior from the G-parents and Morgan slept AWESOME last night - up for one feeding only for about 35 minutes - NO nuk replacements the ENTIRE night. Again - best. night. ever. :)
I suppose I should continue this good wife trend and go take something out for dinner. I don't have to work tomorrow b/c I took a non-contract day - my office was closed anyway - so I'm going "big girl shopping" with a few friends to the outlet mall in Williamsburg. I'm SO super excited about it and feel a little guilty about not bringing Morgan and instead sending her to daycare for a few hours while I'm gone. I think it's ok to take mommy time but I think I'm going to miss her while I'm gone.
Oh - two more things real quick - Morgan giggled for the first time yesterday! It was awesome. We (Al, Sherri, Adam, me, & Morgan) went bowling in the afternoon and Grandma Sherri decided it was time to kiss and nuzzle Morgan in the neck...and all of a sudden she giggled! I repeated it today doing the same thing and it was hilarious. We were all laughing at that point. Second thing - She's REALLY getting active on the floor. As in pushing her feet into the ground, lifting her butt up, rolling to her *side* and getting stuck for real today...I think it's coming soon. I just hope I get to see it!! Gotta go now...more later! Yay for a growing baby!

One Year Ago Today
One year ago today, we began a new chapter in our lives with the news of my pregnancy. February 12th, 2009 will always be a great day in the Schmidt family chapters....and now she's here! I told Adam on our birthdays (feb 5 & 10th) that I couldn't believe that one year ago at that time, we had no idea we would be parents by our next birthday. We are so blessed and lucky. And wow, look what a year can do! :)

Poor, Sad, Sick Baby
She's sick. Morgan's sick. :-( The poor thing has a very runny nose that she does NOT like to be wiped or suctioned. She is very good at moving her head out of the way when she knows it's coming and even immediately following the start of nose attention. This terrible runny nose also makes for some bad coughing at times. We've been watching her closely and she doesn't have a fever, she's still really happy (save for anything to do with her nose), and is eating/peeing/pooing like normal. We called the Ask A Nurse hotline today to make sure that we weren't waiting too long or anything like that, and for the millionth time this weekend, we were told it sounds like Morgan just has a bad cold. The nurse gave us things to watch for and just do the regular elevated head while sleeping, humidifier blasting, and suction to keep her nose clear. So that's what we're going to do. I still feel bad though b/c it's so pathetic to hear her breathing that way knowing we can't do anything about it. :-/
We had a busy weekend! It was my birthday on Friday and kind of last-minute, we decided to go to the Quad Cities for dinner. We invited a ton of friends, not really sure who would come on such short notice. Come to find that there were lots of people ready and willing to go as our group was up to 17 by the time dinner rolled around (included 4 kids) and it was a great time! The drive back was a little tricky as the roads were glass for a ways, but great fun! Then Saturday evening we had our annual Chili Cook off at some friends' house and Morgan did very well (again, save for nose attention) and we went through her normal bedtime routine and she slept there while we had a good time (Adam had a super good time with all the beer pong). Tonight we went to a Super Bowl party for a bit and then headed home for a normal bedtime routine for Morgan before the start of the work week. I'm guessing by the weather forecast that we'll have another odd week b/c I may be involved in either an early out, late start, or snow day at some point this week. I hope it's one or both of the former 2 and not the latter of the three. I have WAY too much to do and catch up on (still) at work so that time away is awful for me.
Ok, battery on the laptop is dying and I'm too tired/lazy to plug it in. More soon...especially if there's a snow day. :-/

Gassy little baby
Poor Morgan. She's got so much air in her little body I think she's going to explode. :-/ Mary called me at work today just after 1pm to report that Morgan had NOT eaten more than 1 oz of milk the whole day. What?!? Where is my hungry little monkey? That's not my kid...so anyway, she asked if Morgan could have some Tylenol b/c she was so upset and feeling icky every time Mary presented her with the bottle and I told her go for it. By the time I got to Mary's to pick her up, Morgan had eaten 1.5 bottles, or around 6 ounces. This is about half of what she normally eats on a 3 bottle day; occasionally she'll be ready to eat when I get there and has only had 2 bottles, but today was a new low. Hopefully this was all a result of her crazy gas today (Deb, my work friend who watched Morgan tonight while Adam and I went to volleyball, said that Morgan belched like Elf did (in the movie) when he does the long, drawn out belch...and then slumped over all tired. :) Atta girl.
And Adam and I got to go play volleyball for our league team and it was awesome. Adam was hitting the daylights out of the ball and I *finally* hit the floor to get a few balls. FINALLY. I've been so chicken and frustrated at myself for not falling/diving for balls, so I was pretty proud that I finally did it! I figured this - I haven't been allowed to fall for just over a year so it was a hard habit to break. Woo hoo! And we won all three. What a great night.
Now it's time to pump (since she had a bottle for her last feeding instead of nursing), double check that things are ready for tomorrow, and then head to bed. Miss Morgan was up at 3:20am last night to eat - not unusual, no real problem there...until it was time for her to go back down and all she did was smile up at me from her crib. So I bounced her on the ball. For 15 minutes. Nothing. Still awake. I called Adam up for his turn since I'd been up for 45 minutes at that point and still had to pump b/c she hadn't eaten enough (although she'd eaten a ton). After pumping I went back to bed but couldn't sleep b/c I heard Adam and Morgan fighting each other upstairs through the monitor. He finally came down to bed at 4:45am and we then listened to Morgan making noises for the next half hour so when she was finally quiet at 5:15am, I was spent b/c I knew my alarm would be going off in 15 minutes. So yup, I'd been up since 3:20am. And worked a full day. And played volleyball. It's amazing what this thing called "motherhood" can make your body handle. Craziness. And did I mention she's getting cuter by the day? Oh, Morgan's getting cuter by the day. And we love her so much!

Lefty?
Few quick things - I finally started moving on my weight loss again (not thanks to any working out, mind you...lacking in motivation there...but come March it will be a different story thanks to a beautiful bridesmaid dress that needs to be worn April 10th...) and am now down to about 10 lbs left to go...well, really it's 8lbs but I had 2 lbs I was trying to shed just after Christmas 2008 and before I got all knocked up and stuff :-) so we're going for those two pounds too. Hopefully my stretch marks will continue to fade and after the weight is gone, I'll be back to semi-normal. I'll take it. :)
Morgan has enjoyed sucking on her hands in the past few weeks, but she's apparently taken a liking to her left pointer finger. I often find her with just that one finger in her mouth while she's hanging out being all cute and such. Adam just gets all excited b/c it's her left hand (it's a baseball thing). :)
Ok, off to stuff diapers. Which I still love despite the *mild* extra work involved. Then it's time to hit the hay for me...sleepy momma!
