Vegas, Baby! Or no baby, I guess

Oh dear, how cliche (Vegas, baby). Oh well, we went, (one of us) came back, and it was great to have some alone time where we could just worry about such things as feeding ourselves (only), sleeping if/when we wanted, getting only one person each dressed/cleaned/etc...it was lovely. Saturday involved lots of airport time but once we were there, it was worth it. I was only there for a short time (Sat-Mon) but we did lots of things such as walking around the strip, little time in the sun (which, it turns out, is enough to make a pasty white midwestern girl quite pink), and an amazing hour and a half at Cirque du Soleil "O". If you are ever in Vegas, it's worth every ridiculous penny that it costs to go to such a show and you'll need to go. It was stunning. It was amazing. People appeared out of water in a way that only can be compared to a Disney movie where you're really not sure how it happened but it's happening right in front of your very eyes but it is anyway. I must have jumped in my seat 100x thinking someone was going to fall or crash or something crazy but it was just. so. good.

I came back yesterday and it was short enough, long enough, and I was more than excited when my little girlies surprised me at the airport when I landed!! I was NOT expecting that whatsoever and was basically trying to pretend not to run people over while running to my car after getting off the (tiny) plane. All of a sudden I saw a little girl but didn't think too much of it b/c I'd seen kids all over the place while traveling but then I saw tiny pigtails and heard that giggle and knew it was MY little girl! I am always on the "sending" (kid to daddy) end of things so it was amazing to actually be on the other side - I'm tearing up just thinking about it. :) Also, I can't imagine what Adam goes through each time he travels. It was hard to leave them and amazing coming back (even after such a short time!). Thanks to my in-laws, Al & Sherri, for surprising me with my babies. Also, I have to say, we're so lucky they were able to come and stay with the girls while we were gone. They were obviously so well cared for and had a great time...poor Morgan was pretty sad for a good couple of hours after they left. Sigh. Sometimes WI is so far away. I couldn't imagine living any further away (ie. a flight?! I'd die).

Other than that, the girls are great and Hadley's eating a bit better even though they both came down with colds yesterday. Both of them LOVE LOVE LOVE the water now and Hadley thoroughly enjoys being in her bumbo while in the water. Morgan continues to be hilarious and testing and acting like she's 13 all at the same time. Adam's losing some of his "baby weight" while I'm struggling to get even a pound ahead. I'm working out almost daily 5-6x/week and using a food diary to keep track of what I'm eating to help me stay on top of what is going in and while I ate ok in Vegas, I was not expecting a huge step back when I got back. I figured b/w the three days, I walked around 8-10 miles (4 of them at the Minneapolis airport at a quick pace while pulling a tiny suitcase and purse that subsequently busted off a wheel the second I got home - awesome timing!) and we worked out Saturday for an hour too. Sigh. Just waiting for something to kick in...

Off to do more laundry. It's good to be home and will be even better when it's Friday and our home is full all the way again. :-D

Week in WI June 2012

Now before you start getting all worried that we fell off the face of the planet, I'm going to say we're still here but me shedding this baby weight once and for all is taking precedence over all of my blogging shenanigans. Since I got a run in before Adam left for work this morning and decluttered/cleaned(ish) 3 rooms in the house during the first hour of collective nap time (oh happy day!!), I'm taking some time to do just that - blogging shenanigans. :)

Pictures of the WI week are here:

Girls Week in WI June 2012

Hadley is a new person. Totally traded her in for a new, updated model while we were in WI. Needless to say, she's changed so much in such a short time! She now:

  • rolls at will all over the place and spins in circles and is starting to scoot forward army-crawl style just a teeny tiny bit at a time (and is trying to wake up from her nap at the moment...stinker).
  • eats lots of foods but is nowhere near her sister's repertoire at this point of the growing game. Foods: carrots, sweet potatoes, green beans (dislikes), peas (dislikes), apples, prunes (we dislike, she likes), pears (not a fan! what a weirdo!), peaches, zucchini, and soon to come, blueberries. I may even be missing a few but can't remember off hand. She's struggling with new or even slightly lumpy textures and actually hasn't been eating well at all lately.
  • sleeps unswaddled all the time. I think we swaddled her for a few hours in the wee hours of the morning once b/c she thought 4:30am was the start of the day. HA. Take that, non-sleeping baby. Last night was the first in a loooong time that we didn't see her until 5:45am. It was glorious.
  • She talks and squeals, but more than she has. She looks when we call her name. She looks to where we are pointing when we show her things. She hugs. She's starting to give kisses when you say "kiss!".
There's more but of course, I started this post midday when I was wide awake and full of ideas and finishing it at the end of the day when my brain is mush and telling me to go to bed. BED. But alas, I'd rather do this and then read my (ridiculously good) book. (Vanishing Acts, Jodi Picoult - yes, finally, Steph. I'll get it back after my Vegas weekend this weekend!)

Speaking of, WE'RE GOING TO VEGAS THIS WEEKEND!! Adam has to travel there for work next week so we're going early and I'm coming. My in-laws are coming down to watch the girls and we leave Saturday morning and I come home Monday evening. We're very much looking forward to the time alone (and I'm dying to get the sleep) and to top it off, Adam got us tickets to Cirque de Soleil, "O" which I'm so very excited to see in person. Yes, it's the water one. I've seen it on TV but I'm sure that is NOTHING compared to in person. Woo!

Morgan is good, as usual. She's found a whiney button recently and we're working on it, but for the most part she continues to be the insightful, beautiful, smarty smart smart little girl we love. She's been even more into books lately and we're enjoying exploring new Pinterest ideas. Yesterday's and today's projects included dying rice and making a sensory bin with it (it's awesome! Even Hadley enjoyed playing with it while I frantically caught all the rice falling on the floor) and freezing a bunch of little toys in a pan of water and giving her a hammer to get them all out. :) Fun times.

Oh right, WI...title of post...must discuss. As it has been the last two years we've gone for our girls' week in June, it was fabulous. We left and had the easiest ride home ever on Tuesday. It got long b/c we took two long stops but for the most part, it was good. Hadley really struggled with eating and hasn't really been back "on" since. It's ok. She's work it out. I just really struggle that my kids won't get enough or the right food and since Hadley's "food development" is taking longer and more of a struggle than was (easy) Morgan's, it's an area of anxiety for me. I'm working on it and attempting a more laid-back approach and it's working for the most part. Anyway...

Wednesday, we spent much of the day at my mom's and then headed back to Al & Sherri's to hang out with them and Tom & Carrie. Thursday was spent at Bay Beach in the morning, Steph and Patt's for a bit in the afternoon, and then a quiet evening at home with the grandmas (Schmidt/Skwor) coming to visit the girls for dinner. Friday was spent running errands in the morning, visiting Grandma Susie, and then surprising Adam at the airport with the girls. He didn't know they were coming and Morgan had the BEST time telling anyone who would listen that her daddy was on any plane in sight and she was going to surprise him. Saturday was busy with Adam golfing, meeting my dad and brothers/families for lunch before heading back to my dad's and then A&S's again to pack up for the next morning. We had breakfast at Perkins with Adam's parents before leaving Sunday morning and then had a nice, easy ride home. All in all, it was GREAT to be home again and we always hate to leave (although who doesn't miss their own bed?!).

*addendum - pictures posted above if you missed them. Enjoy!

Happy 6 months, Hadley!

She's 6 months old! Hadley is already 6 months old?? I know it's totally cliche but where have those last 6 months gone??! It feels like she just joined our family yet has been here always. Enjoy highlights of our rapidly growing, developing, and changing "Howdie."

  • She got her first tooth!! I found it later this afternoon while the girls and I were playing in her room. I was so excited! Three months earlier than when Morgan got her first tooth, both on the day they turned a month older.
  • She's found her voice (reference "yell face pic" below). It's so pleasant. Not really. Well, sometimes, but definitely not in Applebee's after dinner when it's time to leave and she wants NOTHING to do with her carseat SCREAM.
  • She rolls EVERYWHERE. This morning, both girls gave us a present by sleeping VERY late! 7:25 and 7:35. That said, Morgan and I checked on Hadley since this is unprecedented and she was sleeping on her tummy! Sound asleep! PS. She's not been fully swaddled for several nights now. I don't think her tummy/legs are swaddled tonight (Adam was the last to see her) so no worries there. She looked so comfy.
  • Hadley had been changing so rapidly the past few weeks. She now eats well at mealtimes, sometimes appearing to be a little piggy! I almost don't remember what makes her so much different than a month ago, but she is and it's great. I love when they're tiny but it's so fun watching them grow!
  • Hadley will be weaned as of tomorrow. I was unsure of what day to officially make this happen but this morning when she pinched me 100x, was not even CLOSE to focused on the task at hand, and just seemed over it, I decided the frustration of one feeding a day was not worth it anymore. That said, I'm looking forward to date night with Adam in WI on Friday and enjoying TWO glasses of wine without a second thought in .... well over a year.
  • Hadley is just a pleasant baby to be around still. She's turning into her own little person with lots to say (she's been chatting up a STORM lately) and is taking in the world around her. She continues to LOVE watching those around her, especially kids.
  • We love our Howdie! Happy 6 months, baby!!

Best picture I could get next to the Polar Bear without her eating it.

See? NOM NOM NOM I love you polar bear

Sisters for 6 months! Taa daaaaa!

Seriously. She was not having this shoot so here the smily falling over one.

This is mah YELL FACE!!

The reason I keep chewing on my fingers is b/c I'm a normal
baby and get teeth on time unlike my sister! First tooth found later this afternoon!

I kick you for taking too many pictures, mom. Hai-ya.

Sisters again. Morgan wanted sooooo badly to suck her
thumb during these pics but wasn't allowed. Poor kid.

That's some serious sister love. Sorry, Hadley's belly.

The Great Garage Sale has ended (woot woot)

I am sucking at keeping up with this blog lately, you guys. (I know, I know, I can hear all the DUHs). Now that the garage sale is over, not a trace of it left, I can focus on more important things - like really getting this summer under way. Next up? Heading to WI on Tuesday through Sunday for some serious family time while Adam travels to God only knows where in Canada (he just told me Montreal/Toronto, so there you go) and meets us there Friday afternoon. To say I can't wait is a serious understatement. The dogs are staying home (our favorite local kennel) so it's just a girlies trip on the way up, plus one daddy on the way home.

Warning - I'm obsessed with two apps on my iPod touch (can't wait until this is my iPhone whenever I'm due for a new one, btw). One is the Nike Training Club app which has TONS of really great workouts that you can really mold to fit you and what you want/need for your 15-45 minute workout. NOTE: The advanced level is significantly more challenging so it wasn't funny to laugh at Adam practically dying when he attempted it way before I did...oops. :) It's awesome to say the least and is perfect for girlie nap time or after bedtime when I need to do something besides carry a child (or two) around all day and push everyone in/on their swings. Second app - My Fitness Pal (free! even better!). It helps you log any and everything you could possibly want to know about what's going in/out of your body, including calories and pounds and inches and and and. What we both are doing is initially setting up how much we want to lose and how fast. I set mine to lose a pound a week which I thought was very realistic. Adam, being a boy and able to lose weight when he wants (like boys can do, it's so not fair), set his to two pounds a week. It tells you how many calories you should have for the day but it takes into account exercise (earn more calories!) and then tells you at the end of the day how you'd be doing in 5 weeks if you ate like you did that day every day until then. Sorry for the long, drawn out chat on apps and how they are going to help me get back into my Joes, but it's a really big part of my life right now b/c I am so.over. feeling like junk and not fitting into my clothes. Ten pounds? You're going to be gone in ten weeks. But let's say 11 b/c I'm not logging anything into (at least MFP) these apps while in Vegas. ;-)

Another me/Hadley note - she's almost weaned. I'm down to one feeding a day and it's first thing in the morning since she was SO sleepy at night feedings and not getting as much as she should/could. I think it's only a few more mornings even that I'm going to do that before she's weaned for good. It's bittersweet b/c it's always hard for it to be my "last feeding" b/c once that factory is even remotely shut down, it's over. No going back. My body practically rejoices in being dried up. I know I have friends out there who are not so lucky and weaning is a completely different (painful) experience for them...but I'll thank my lucky stars and once that tie is severed, we'll move on and I'll really start to enjoy my complete freedom to have my body back to myself again (and be able to eat/drink as much/little as I want and know I'm not affecting a tiny little person who is so dependent on me).

I suppose I should blog about the garage sale since it took over the title of this post (really, it's just late, I'm tired, and couldn't think of anything better. Lame-ity lame lame, I know). SO, Julie and I had a garage sale yesterday and today to get rid of the gob tons of stuff that were collected in our basement and various closets in tubs from when we were going to sell the house last summer. We made a fair chunk of change and hauled the rest to Goodwill this afternoon. It feels so good to have that done. Next time I have one will be when Hadley is out of 3T stuff and I can get rid of IT ALL (sniffle sniffle...they'll both be so BIG by then). I can't imagine how much we're going to get for all their toys and baby items (exersaucer, etc). Those garage sales are killer. :) Today, Julie had a commitment (she covered for one of mine yesterday so it worked out really well!) so I had the sale and both girls alone until ten. I was really nervous but everyone behaved SO well and I actually had to wake Hadley from the world's longest nap (for her) so she could stay on track for a good afternoon nap - which actually happened! I think we're onto something there which I couldn't be happier about.

Tonight, while Adam was putting Hadley to bed (and actually, the two of them fell asleep in the rocker for a while), I was outside playing with Morgan on her playground set and around the camp fire and it sort of blew me away with how big she's getting. I don't necessarily mean size, but how grown up she's getting. She was chattering away like a monkey in a tree and at one point told me, "Mama, I don't want you to help me. I want to figure it out by myself." No kidding, word for word. While I was beyond proud of her for wanting to figure something out on her own and saying so, a tiny little piece of my heart broke. And now that I'm tearing up, maybe it was a bigger piece than I thought...It's just hard watching her get so big so fast and be so good at it. She's such a delight to be around (ok, 98% of the time) and I just hope and pray that she never loses that focus and that drive to speak her mind and be sure of herself in such a way. Oh seriously, now I'm all tears all over. Ridiculous...but still. It's hard to think of her as not necessarily my baby anymore b/c she's always going to be my first baby. Ok, topic change or I'm going to cry myself to sleep. I think I'm a little tired. Yeah, that's it.

I'm saving Hadley things for tomorrow since she's going to be SIX MONTHS OLD and all. Six months ago at this very moment, we were thinking about getting ready to go to bed and I told my dad (who was visiting that weekend) that we might be going to the hospital in the next few hours b/c I was having what I thought were real-live contractions (remember - I was induced with Morgan so I thought contractions were something totally different) and the look on his face was priceless b/c he had no idea. :)

Adam's doing well. He's lost 5lbs on his apps (well, in real life but it's b/c of those apps) and is feeling pretty good about it. Work is busy but relatively manageable right now. We just decided that I'd take him to the airport on Monday so we don't have to pick up his truck on Sunday on our way through and add that much more time to the trip with two girlies (who will hopefully be so tired and have a similar trip home to what they did after Tommy's & Carrie's wedding weekend. Adam has the city golf tournament this weekend and tees off at 11am tomorrow (ick) but we'll work around it and go from there. My goal by Monday night is to have a clean house, packed bags, and have to wake up Tues morning to take the girls to Mary's to eat breakfast while I do the 45 minute round trip to drop the dogs off before we make our way home. I'm not going to be in any super rush so we'll just plug away at the miles and hope for the best.

Ok friends. I need to get my hiney in bed b/c if I'm a bettin' kinda girl, I can bet you that Hadley will have a poopy diaper sometime between now and 5am. Awesome sauce. Praying for this new poop schedule to go away so we can sleep in poopless bliss for a while.

Rollin' rollin' rollin'

Hadley can now roll front to back and back to front (to her left). Before Adam went to go back to work at the end of lunch, she did it twice using her legs against the bars of her jungle gym but then he got a 1/2 mile down the road and I'd moved her so she couldn't cheat, and she did it again anyway. :)

Also, she LOVES to stand now, especially if there is something fun going on like her music table (which Morgan SWEARS SWEARS SWEARS is hers and struggles to share even though she's not played with it for ... oh, well over a year).

It seems like the last two weeks have seen some major movements with Hadley's development which is good for our peace of mind b/c even though I tell parents ALL the dang time not to compare their kids, I am completely guilty. I don't do it in a competitive way (like ohhh, Morgan was better for doing this first, or woo! Hadley's better at that!) but more so in a "I hope there's not something wrong" kind of way. (I know, it's ridiculous and we are blessed with two very healthy, happy little girls). Anyway. It's fine. She's growing and developing quite nicely.

Morgan, on the other hand, is struggling. Today she told me that ALL of the toys were hers. I told her that wasn't the case and she very emphatically informed me otherwise. And it begins...

I swear I've heard Morgan produce the /k,g/ sounds in the past week or so, but when I ask her to repeat a word, she fronts it like any other child her age would. I'm very aware that she's completely appropriate for her age in this respect, but I may have a party the day she gets her velars. She's got so many other sounds that for me to think about this daily is ridiculous. I'll blame my undiagnosed OCD. ;-)

We are just about ready for our rummage sale this weekend (Fri/Sat). Adam has a golf tournament on Saturday so I'm not 100% sure what I'm going to do with the girls but we'll figure it out. I'm thinking a mommy's helper or something.

Other than that, Hadley's been getting up at 5am-ish for a week now. She doesn't usually go back to sleep. I blame soaked wet diapers, poo diapers, and all around happy child issues. 5am. GAH. I'm hoping getting Hadley on a normal napping schedule (one in the morning, one in the afternoon) will help this.

Did I mention Hadley eats like a CRAZY person now? As in 2oz of formula to oatmeal (which I think is giving her a rash around her face and I'm switching her back to rice cereal tomorrow) and a full tub/container of 1st baby foods? At each meal to boot. I'm telling you, the past 2 weeks have seen amazing changes in our little baby.

Sorry for the Hadley-heavy post ... she's just changing a ton and I didn't want to miss anything.

Speaking of not missing anything, I need to NOT miss more sleep so I'm going to bed. It's funny b/c people go to Vegas to stay up all night and party and seriously, I might pack PJs and a swimsuit so I can sleep as much as I want, lay out and sleep, and then go inside to sleep some more. It's going to be awesome.

Random small talk person: "Vegas?! That's awesome! What did you guys do?"
Me: "Oh, well, you know ... I slept. The whole time."

Peas and Floss

My kids, God bless them, are a little odd. Hadley's new favorite food is peas. She will eat them and eat them and hang her mouth open for more if you're not fast enough. She's now taking 6oz bottles at every feeding except her morning one, but I suspect she's going to need 4oz after that one tomorrow b/c my supply is just that low and she's just that hungry. Her 6 month well-check is next Monday so we'll see if she's catching up to her big sister at 6 months or if she's hanging out in "tiny peanut" range. I suspect she'll be somewhere in the middle. Little cutie pie. :)

Morgan LOVES to floss, thank you Grandma Sherri. Tonight she would have flossed for a half hour if I'd have let her but then she would have been significantly past her bedtime and with all the whining that occurred today (she's trying out a new phase of fussing every time she's told no or to wait or some other undesirable answer), she needed to be in bed on time.

My kids are weird but at least it's for good reason. :) Hadley did NOT like her peaches for breakfast. She's like her Uncle Tommy - too much flavor (although in all fairness, Uncle Tommy has significantly improved his eating habits since he was a wee one just starting off in college).

What a great day we had - we went out for breakfast since church now starts at 9am (woo!) and then of course, went to church. After that we came home so Hadley could have a real nap (not a 15 minute one in the car) and cleaned/played/did general things around the house until lunch when one kid woke up and the other went down - we're working on this hard core over the summer, mind you. We might be in hiding for the first two weeks of summer while Hadley finally gets a real nap schedule established again of morning nap, afternoon nap. No cat naps or I feel like it naps. It's business time. Mommy's going to need that 1-2 hours daily for many many reasons. ;-)

I suppose...if I want a bed to sleep in, I better go put all the laundry away and MAKE the bed before it's so late I can't see straight. One more day of work tomorrow - SO excited about this - and then it's summer freedom!! Happy June, folks!

Ah, to play catch up.

There's so much to catch up on it's not even funny. So much new stuff, so much same stuff, but the new stuff is more fun so we'll go with it. Sorry, faithful blog followers (although sometimes I wonder if I really even do have any? Many?)

Hadley is a ball of hilarious nowadays. She blows raspberries in a way that makes you smile or even laugh hysterically if you're with her or two rooms away. She *almost* rolled from her back to belly today but didn't quite make it. She now eats: oatmeal (although I think this is giving her a little rash on her face...we might go back to rice cereal soon and see), sweet potatoes, peas (holy diapers, good Lord), peaches, carrots, and bananas (we should buy stock b/w the girls and how many bananas they eat).

Hadley loves her exersaucer and now stands well and spins in it, although she can't quite spin on exact demand...it takes her a little bit to figure it out and get to that darn sheep. ;-)

I got Hadley this cute little blue hippo at Hobby Lobby the other day in hopes that this becomes her "lovey" similar to Morgan's bunny and baby jaguar. We shall see. So far she's tried to eat him 3x and threw him on the floor from her swing once. I think it's love.

Morgan's been great, too. She's getting older by leaps and bounds and continues to amaze us with what she does and says. She loves to ride her bike and swings on her big girl swing only now while making sure that Hadley knows she should swing next to her in the pink swing (which Hadley now likes, mind you).

I have only one day left of work this school year and I'm "free." :) I'm so very much looking forward to spending this summer with twogirls and doing all sorts of fun things - like getting Hadley on a normal morning/afternoon nap schedule. I still have a day towards the end of June and likely two half days in July before starting again on August 13th. Yesterday, the SLP dept was rather quiet as most of the SLPs in my sector are either done with contract days, successfully retired, or working out of a closer (to their home) office and I got TONS done. I am so thankful for good friends and Pinterest as I feel like I have tons of fun new ideas to try out next year and am hoping I feel better at my job. Lots of times, I feel like I could/should be doing better for my students but at the end of the day, I'm folding diapers or getting bottles ready instead of being productive professionally like I know so many of my coworkers in the same "life" situation as I have, do. That's what makes them awesome, among other reasons, of course.

Adam's doing fine also, of course, as it is golf season. He's having a great year so far and shooting under 80 on occasion. We and Sarah & Eric Ries went golfing while the girls (5 of them) did their best to find, take out, and play with every toy in the house, as little girls should do. I shot a 116 which I thought was pretty awesome considering I was out 1-2x last year (while pregnant) and none this year. My current goal is under 110 (used to be 100) so hopefully I can get out a few more times and hit that by the end of the year (which is about a month earlier for me than Adam as I am a fair weather fan at heart).

Let's see, what else is going on in the Schmidt household? I feel like I'm missing out on some of Hadley's milestones but of course, can't think of any at the moment. I've started signing with her while she's drinking water at mealtimes which is her OHMYGOSHFAVORITE thing in the whole wide world. Thank goodness she doesn't nurse with such vigor or I might have died. She doesn't even necessarily drink from the sippy but loves to bite it. PS. No teeth yet.

Speaking of nursing...I'm in the process of weaning Hadley. It took me weeks to come to this decision but it's time. I kept up with Morgan until 8 months but the last month for sure was just morning/night feedings and no daytime ones. Today (and for the past week) she had three nursings...tomorrow starts morning/night feedings only. It's been ok so far for her although she tries to eat any part of me (shoulder, face, etc) when I pick her up from daycare. If I give her a 2oz bottle, she's fine. There are several reasons though, some of which are, but not limited to: 1. I'm so over it mentally. 2. She's not as interested as she used to be which makes it frustrating for both of us sometimes. 3. My supply is dying. If I work out, it dips big time. If I even consider eating a few less calories, dip. 4. We're going to Vegas at the end of June. I'll be with Adam for 2 days before he has a week long conference and selfishly, I don't want to take my pump along and get almost nothing which is precisely what will happen. I know my body enough to know that much. So...long story short, I thought I'd nurse her through the summer but I'm just not. I'm glad I was able to make it this far, I guess.

I'm going to have to cut off for now. I'm so very excited that my 1-1.5 mile run tonight turned into a 3 mile run but that said, I've been working out lots lately, the girls are MUCH better at night but still no 7 consecutive hour nights, and I'm tired. It's clean the house after church before I go mad day tomorrow but I'm thinking I see some time at the park and riverfront with Morgan on her bike...such a big girl. Ready? Set? BED.
